Day 13 and 14 - SD Half Marathon Weekend

The business class snack pack
Wow, was this weekend tough for eating. I had to pick the lesser of all evils on the train and in the hotel in the early morning hours without a fridge or microwave. I was able to throw down two eggs before I hopped on the train and throw a few snacks in my bag. I was on the train for six hours from 9AM until 3PM.

My train snacks: tiny V8, a small tin of sardines (I went to the back of the car where the smell would not travel), a Kind Bar and a small box of coconut milk beverage. I had a handful of almonds and cashews from the train snack pack, but they were gross. There was some weird oil like palm oil on them. Why would you coat nuts in oil? They are made of oil!

I finally got to settle down to a quick meal at 5:00 after picking up my race bib. The restaurant was not open yet which forced me to order a dinner off of the bar menu. I had a garden salad and a burger. The pics from my blackberry look gross, but it was actually very tasty after not having a good meal all day. I needed more calories for the race, so after dinner I ordered a prawn appetizer to go. I had the prawns about an hour after dinner. The lights were out at 7PM. I was asleep by 8PM.

Second snack - Prawns over avocado and sesame oil with peppers
We had to wake up at 3AM and be on the bus by 4AM. The restaurants were not open and I did not have a fridge. I brought tuna just in case of a dire emergency. Thankfully these cans were never opened!
Luckily the hotel gift shop had Kind bars and bottled water. I stocked up for breakfast, pre-race, recovery and train snacks. I had a Kind bar, pureed fruit (baby food which travels well in an emergency) and a Starbucks Via instant coffee for breakfast at 3AM. I ate a second Kind Bar at 6AM for additional fuel. The race started at 6:15.
I pushed through the race as hard as I could. I ran a 9 minute mile pace which is faster than my normal training pace. I had some crazy idea that I wanted to finish in under two hours (mission accomplished) and my body is feeling it today. It's beat up like the day after I finished my first marathon! I finished the race well before 9AM and had a banana for recovery. My mom and her friend took me to lunch at Roys. I had an ahi poke app,  butterfish with white rice, bok choy and carrots. The sauce was soy and sesame oil, not Paleo, but really tasty!

Before hopping on the train I had a prawn salad that only came with three prawns. I had some apple sauce and another kind bar on the train. I also broke into the nuts in the snack pack again.

I am home now. I weighed myself: 108.4
No weight gain from the road food but maybe a little light because of dehydration, although I have been drinking a ton of water. Justin would not let me go to sleep without drinking more.

I made a nice scramble for breaky. I am hitting the road again after lunch for another week of challenging road food which I will fully document. I already miss home and I have not even left yet.

It is a lot different when you aren't at home to cook all of your meals!!! Good luck in Santa Cruz :) xo
